"A good publisher grows like a tree" was the pithy observation tendered by HOFMMANN UND CAMPE Verlag on the occasion of its bicentenary in 1981. The early days of this publishing house were graced by such authors as Heinrich Heine, Friedrich Hebbel, Ludwig Börne and other members of the rebellious group of young writers known as Junges Deutschland. The old-established company, in which Kurt Ganske first acquired a stake in 1941 and subsequently bought out in 1950, is the fount of the group’s entire book publishing activities today. The aspirations once cherished by the legendary publisher Julius Campe have been upheld in the publisher’s list to this day. HOFFMANN UND CAMPE is one of Germany’s largest and most successful general publishers with a portfolio which embraces the works of famous authors as well as promoting young writing talent. Since 1951, all works by the eminent narrative writer Siegfried Lenz have been published under the HOFFMANN UND CAMPE imprint. The literary fiction list further boasts such names as Doris Lessing, Irina Korschunow, V.S. Naipaul, John Grisham, Matthias Politycki, Fay Weldon, Patricia Cornwell, Liza Marklund, Francis Fyfield, Manfred Bieler, Ulrich Woelk, Edna O'Brien and Andreï Makine, while the non-fiction list includes Hoimar von Ditfurth, Lew Kopelew, Dieter E. Zimmer, Christian Graf von Krockow, Cornelia Schmalz-Jacobsen, Dorothee Sölle, Stephen Hawking, Uta Ranke-Heinemann, Gregor Gysi, Gero von Randow and Ulrich Wickert. Since 1996 the fiction and non-fiction lists have been completed by an own audio book department.
